Group classes have their place. But if you want to understand your body, correct deep-seated patterns, and progress efficiently, nothing replaces one-on-one instruction.
There is a version of Pilates that most people know: a group reformer class, a mat session at the gym, a fitness format among many. It is accessible, social, and a perfectly reasonable way to move your body.
And then there is private Pilates — and it is an entirely different experience.
If you have only ever practiced in a group setting, a private session with a skilled classical instructor may be the most illuminating hour you spend in a studio. Here is why.
Your Body Is Not Generic
Every person who walks into a Pilates studio brings a unique history: old injuries, habitual movement patterns, structural asymmetries, areas of chronic tension, and areas of surprising weakness. A group class, by necessity, teaches to the middle. The instructor cues for the average body, progresses at the average pace, and cannot stop to address what is happening in your left hip or why your shoulder keeps creeping toward your ear.
A private session is built entirely around you. Before the work begins, a skilled instructor assesses how you move — where you compensate, where you hold, what your body does when it is asked to do something unfamiliar. That assessment shapes everything that follows.
The exercises you do, the modifications you receive, the cues that land — all of it is calibrated to your body on that particular day. That level of specificity is simply not possible in a group setting, no matter how attentive the instructor.
You Learn Faster
Pilates has a reputation for being subtle. The work happens deep in the body — in the stabilising muscles, the breath, the quality of movement rather than the quantity. In a group class, it can take months to understand what you are actually supposed to be feeling.
In a private session, the feedback is immediate and precise. Your instructor can place a hand on your lower back to help you feel the connection you are missing. They can stop an exercise mid-movement to correct something before it becomes a habit. They can explain, in the moment, exactly what your body is doing and what it needs to do instead.
That kind of real-time correction accelerates learning dramatically. Students who begin with private sessions before joining group classes consistently report that they understand the work more deeply and progress more quickly than those who start in groups.
The Full Classical Repertoire Is Available to You
In a group class, the instructor must choose exercises that are appropriate for everyone in the room. That means the advanced work — the exercises that require significant preparation, strength, and body awareness — rarely appears.
In a private session, your instructor can take you exactly as far as you are ready to go. If you are a beginner, the session builds the foundation carefully and correctly. If you are an experienced practitioner, the session can challenge you with advanced work on the full range of classical apparatus: the reformer, the Cadillac, the Wunda Chair, the Ladder Barrel.
The classical method is a complete system with hundreds of exercises designed to be explored progressively over years of practice. Private sessions are how you actually access that system.
It Is Particularly Valuable After Injury
Pilates has a long history as a rehabilitative practice, and for good reason. The classical method is inherently corrective — it identifies and addresses imbalances rather than working around them.
But rehabilitation requires precision. Working with an injury in a group class, where the instructor cannot monitor your every movement, carries real risk. A private session allows your instructor to understand exactly what has happened in your body, what movements are appropriate, and how to progress the work safely as you heal.
Many of our clients come to us after surgery, chronic pain, or years of compensating for an old injury. The private session is where that work begins — carefully, intelligently, and with full attention on what your body actually needs.
What to Expect at Pilates Fine Arts Academy
Our private sessions are conducted on the full range of classical apparatus in our Coral Gables studio. Each session is led by a certified classical instructor who will assess your movement, understand your goals, and design a session that challenges and supports you in equal measure.
We work with clients at every level — from those who have never touched a reformer to advanced practitioners looking to deepen their practice or prepare for teacher training.
If you are ready to experience what Pilates can do when it is truly personalised, we invite you to book your first private session. The difference will be apparent from the first hour.
